Award-winning Virtual Exchange (COIL) with Arkio

The Design Futures Exchange has been a more-than three-year partnership in the architectural education of students at Arizona State University (ASU) in the U.S., and An-Najah National University (NNU) in the West Bank. The project has been supported by the J. Christopher Stevens Virtual Exchange Initiative.

Project Summary: Virtual City – A Collaborative 3D Modeling and Game Design Project

At Kulturskolan in Mjölby, a group of students took part in a creative project that combined 3D modeling, digital design, and collaborative play. Using Blender, the students designed and modeled a variety of 3D objects.

Building Our Ideal City — A Student Design Project Update

Our class has been designing a city from the ground up using Arkio, starting with a 2D map poster and working our way toward a full 3D printed physical model. As a group, we made decisions about zoning, transportation, and more.

Last year in the Reality Check course

Students explored architecture in mixed reality using Arkio through a midterm assignment focused on designing a continuous virtual path. The goal was to connect three distinct points A, B, and C.

One of the objectives for Arkio’s 1.7 release

was to enhance the capabilities of the wristband UI. Sitting on the user’s wrists, the wristband UI serves as an easily accessible interface for the user to perform actions such as entering or exiting mixed reality mode, locking the model in place, etc.

My name is Claudia! I’m an architect with a strong interest in emerging design tools and spatial technologies. I currently teach Virtual Reality in architecture at the BAC, where I explore how immersive environments can support design thinking, collaboration, and new ways of working.
